Creative Journeys Project

Date published: 26/09/2018

Full Story:

The Creative Journeys’ project is a health and wellbeing research programme initiated by Essex County Council’s Culture & Community Engagement team in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University, funded by Arts Council England.

Working in 8 care home settings across Essex with leading arts organisations Age Exchange, Magic Me, Green Candle Dance and Orchestras Live with Sinfonia Viva, the project explores the benefits of cultural activity with older people, including physical mobility, mental health/loneliness and social relationships. The programme also includes training for carers and upskilling for cultural professionals working in the sector.

On 28th November key messages from the research were shared at a Showcase Event, which so far include:

·         Arts activities positively impact on residents, their relatives and care home staff by strengthening their relationships
·         Activities help to break down barriers between those living in care homes and the wider community
·         The arts have unique qualities that engage residents and help them to express themselves creatively

A wonderful short film of the project giving an overview of the cultural activity which has taken place as part of the project can be viewed here

Now that this initial phase of the project has come to an end project partners are exploring ways to deliver cultural services for those living with the dementia in the community at cultural venues in Essex.
